The S84 Shade to Black is a collaboration between Rob Dietrich, the Master Distiller & Blender of BLACKENED Whiskey; James Hetfield, Metallica co-founder, singer and guitarist; and Jonathan Drew, Founder and President of Drew Estate. The cigar starts in the medium to medium+ range and certainly ends on the full side of the spectrum, with the Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper adding those layers of buttery, creamy, light notes while the broadleaf binder and fillers add those rich, earthy notes. The cigar is described as deliciously divisive, being very much a traditional Connecticut Shade cigar with many of the lighter, herbal outdoor, and doughy baking flavors, but also dark, spicy, and somewhat sharp at times, resulting in a very smooth, medium-powered cigar flavor profile.
The S84 Shade to Black pays homage to Metallica's second album, Ride the Lightning, with "Shade to Black" being an ode to the song "Fade to Black" from their 1984 album. The cigar takes aficionados on a nuanced journey with its deliciously smooth and inviting blend, wrapped in a luxurious Connecticut Ecuador cover leaf. The S84 is now available to all retailers across the United States, marking a significant expansion in distribution from the exclusive Drew Diplomat Program availability of its Maduro predecessor.
The wrapper gives off aromas of grass, tobacco, hay, cedar, cream and soft spices, while the foot presents lightly toasted bread, a rich fruit note, tobacco, and a hint of barnyard. The cigar introduces a creamy flood of palate-coating flavor, offering a lighter-wrapped alternative to the hit Blackened M81 with a rush of wood and nutty tones with a wealth of tasty nuances.
