The Herrera Esteli Norteno earned a prestigious 94-point rating from Cigar Aficionado and was ranked as the #7 cigar of 2016. This full-bodied cigar features long-fillers from the fertile Nicaraguan growing regions of Jalapa and Esteli, both known for producing bold and hearty tobaccos. The blend utilizes a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper, Honduran binder, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, creating rich notes of raw cocoa bean, refined milk chocolate and nougat, yet maintains its earthy qualities without becoming too sweet.
The name "Norteno" means "northerners" in Spanish and was chosen because people from Estelí are referred to as 'Nortenos'. This was the first cigar brand released from the Drew Estate factory after Willy Herrera was named Master Blender in June of 2014. All sizes are soft box-pressed and come in 10-count boxes, packed without cellophane and decorated with a simple green and cream-colored band bearing the embossed image of Nicaragua's national bird, the Guardabarranco.
The Norteno delivers a full-bodied and full-flavored smoking experience loaded with earth and cedar and black pepper at the base, but enlightened with buttered toast, sweet currants, and a luscious floral aroma. The small-batch cigar delivers a solid profile of cocoa and nougat with sweet notes of cedar throughout a creamy, dense finish.
