The Diamond Crown Maximus was launched in 2005 to celebrate J.C. Newman's 110th anniversary, created by Stanford Newman as a hearty complement to the wildly successful Diamond Crown line. This full-flavored, bold cigar was developed through collaboration between three legendary cigar families: the Newmans, Fuentes, and Olivas. The Maximus is designed as a bold, full-flavored line extension with comparable strength and body to Nicaraguan or Honduran blends but maintains a distinctive Dominican character. Professional ratings include recognition as one of Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 Cigars of 2009, with scores of 96 from Cigar & Spirits, 93 from Cigar Journal, 90 from Cigar Snob, and 95 from Smoke Magazine.
The Maximus is exclusively hand-rolled in the Dominican Republic by Carlito Fuente's master rollers at Tabacalera A. Fuente. The wrapper is a special Ecuadorian tobacco exclusively grown in the El Bajo region of the Oliva's Ecuador plantation, situated in a pristine valley where centuries of rain have washed mountain minerals into the soil. Only the richest, hardiest and darkest tobacco from the top priming 'corona' of the plant is used, and due to the tobacco's weight, Carlos Fuente is able to re-bulk and re-ferment the tobacco, further contributing to its full flavor and dark color. The cigars are aged for 5 years before release.
Professional reviews describe the wrapper as having unmistakable sweet chocolate notes with dark fruity undertones, while the cold draw reveals hints of hay, earth, and chocolate. The smoking experience is characterized as complex with nice sweetness that carries through most of the way, while delivering varying amounts of pepper, earth, cedar, and citrus, with surprisingly little resemblance to other Fuente factory cigars. In terms of strength and body, the cigar starts on the upper end of mild to medium, progressing to the medium range by the second third.
