Background
The brand's namesake was born Julius Newman in 1875 in a small Hungarian village, sailing to America in 1888 in search of the American Dream. With no middle name, immigration officers required him to choose one, and upon suggestion, he selected Caesar after the great Roman leader. Due to a clerical error, it was misspelled as 'Caeser' with an 'e', creating the unique spelling that defines the brand today. Unlike his brothers who became tailors, J.C. had a yearning to make cigars, with his mother paying an experienced cigar maker $3.00 a month to teach her son the art of hand rolling. In May 1895, he started his company by hand-rolling his first 500 cigars for the family grocer, establishing a family legacy that would flourish four generations later. Today, his grandchildren Eric and Bobby Newman run the company, creating this commemorative cigar line to honor both their grandfather's 135th birthday and the company's 115th anniversary.
History
Founded in 1895 when Hungarian émigré Julius C. Newman established a cigar company in his family's barn in Cleveland, the company has remained family-owned for over four generations. The family business eventually moved from Cleveland to Tampa, Florida, where J.C. Newman continues its cigar-making tradition. Diamond Crown was one of J.C.'s earliest cigar brands, later re-launched by Stanford J. Newman in 1995 to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary, followed by Diamond Crown MAXIMUS in 2002. The Julius Caeser line was introduced in 2010 as a tribute to the founder, celebrating what would have been his 135th birthday and the company's 115th anniversary.
Reputation
Julius Caeser has earned exceptional recognition in the premium cigar industry, with Cigar Aficionado naming it to their Top 25 Cigars of the Year lists in both 2011 and 2014, and Cigars & Spirits awarding it Cigar of the Year in 2017. The brand consistently receives high ratings, including a 93-rating from Cigar Aficionado, which praised its 'rich, coffee-laden smoke' and 'bold coffee balanced by sweet and spicy woody flavors.' Industry experts note that 'there is nothing that compares to the Julius Caeser' and 'no other cigar on the market even comes close.' As a limited production beauty rolled in small batches by the renowned Fuente family, it 'easily fits in with the elite crowd' of premium cigars.
