Factory Throwout
Factory Throwouts are a true, unchanged American classic that represents exceptional value in the premium cigar market. Every cigar is made in the original Cigar City – Tampa, FL – on the same hand-operated machines that were used in the iconic boom eras of the 1930's and 40's. These cigars embody the authentic Tampa cigar-making tradition with slightly discolored tobacco from expensive Ecuadorian sungrown imports, bought at a cheaper rate by J.C. Newman, with the savings passed onto the consumer. It is from this tradition, incredible value with near-perfect quality, that J.C. Newman derives its premium value bundle brand of the Factory Throwout. The brand offers smooth, medium-bodied cigars that deliver premium tobacco quality at affordable prices, making them ideal for everyday smoking.

Background
Seconds or throwout cigars are a time-honored tradition in Cigar City. Tampa, known for its hundreds of cigar factories and billions of cigars, has long produced the world's finest stogies. Weary travelers, on their sojourns to Key West or Orlando, frequently stopped by Tampa's cigar factories to pick up imperfect cigars at a discounted price. Normally, a Tampa palma was priced at a quarter. If it had damage to its wrapper or an imperfect shape, however, it was priced at a nickel or a dime. This made factory throwouts, rejects, or smokers—as they were called—an immensely popular form of cigar and a profitable stream of revenue for cigar manufacturers. In Tampa, cigar factories had a tradition of selling "throwout" cigars (called seconds, rejects, smokers, brevas, or fumas) to walk-in customers at a discounted price. The Factory Throwout pays homage to this tradition enjoyed by Floridians for decades. J.C. Newman Cigar Co. has made these cigars with the same machines for the last ninety years continuously, maintaining an authentic connection to Tampa's golden age of cigar manufacturing.
History
Founded in 1895 by Julius Caeser Newman, J.C. Newman Cigar Company is the oldest family-owned premium cigar maker in America. The business relocated to a historic 1910 cigar factory (Regensburg cigar factory) in the Cigar City of Ybor City, Florida in 1954 when J.C. determined that the company's future lay in the manufacture of premium cigars. He resolved to relocate to Tampa, which enjoyed a world-class reputation for producing high-quality premium cigars. Company founder Julius Caeser Newman purchased our hand-operated cigar machines in the 1930s. They were built by AMF, the same company that builds bowling ball return machines, and each has approximately 10,000 parts. A century ago, there were 150 large cigar factories in Ybor City. Today, J.C. Newman is the only one still in operation. Here, skilled cigar rollers use hand-operated, vintage cigar machines from the 1930s to roll value-priced cigars under brand names such as Factory Throwouts.
Reputation
Factory Throwouts have earned a solid reputation as exceptional value cigars that deliver premium tobacco quality at budget-friendly prices. Demand for Newman's inexpensive smokes, sold under such names as Factory Throwouts, Rigoletto Black Jacks and Mexican Segundos, has been surprisingly strong in the down economy. If there's one thing I can say about JC Newman Cigars, it's that they're dead-honest. From the card on the front of the bundle: "Slightly Off Color". Industry reviewers consistently praise their construction quality, smooth burn characteristics, and authentic Tampa heritage. These Factory Throwouts are so darn tasty, you'll be left scratching your head and wondering what makes them throwouts anyway. Slight discoloration, sun spots, minor and miniscule blemishes....that's it. The good part is that they are a fraction of their full-priced counterparts. The brand has maintained its position as a go-to choice for daily smokers and those seeking quality cigars without premium pricing.
