The Asylum 13 is an all-Nicaraguan puro featuring a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan filler. Positioned as the fullest-bodied cigar in the Asylum portfolio, the 13 was designed to be the strongest of the bunch. The cigar has received a 91-point rating, with reviewers noting "primary notes of malted chocolate and coffee bean are accompanied by hints of baking spices and leather, all leaving a mocha-like aftertaste on the finish".
Asylum Cigars made its debut around the 2012 IPCPR Trade Show, with the company started by Tom Lazuka and Kevin Baxter, partnering with Christian Eiroa and his Tabacaleras Unidas company. The Asylum 13 line is an ultra boutique cigar brand created by Christian Eiroa, focusing on ultra rich full-bodied blends using an all-Nicaraguan approach and made at Eiroa's Tabacaleras Unidas factory. The cigars deliver rich tobacco tasting smoke that is deep, dark, and filled with flavors of espresso, leather, and spicy-sweet goodness.
While the line is skewed toward bigger ring gauges, the cigars were quick to gain recognition upon their debut, making waves with a host of gordo sizes that offer full-flavored profiles and long smoking times of two hours or more. The Asylum 13 is known for its high flavor output and medium-full body, hitting standout notes of toasted oak, black pepper, baker's cocoa, and semi-sweet molasses toast.
